Business Modeling and Simulation
In modern complex environments the use of dynamic simulations for investigating new business and upgrades has become extremely important. The impact of change in these businesses is multidimensional and cannot be easily explored and quantified using traditional methods.
Many clients have been using BeST's services to create "virtual businesses" to explore the effects of planned changes on their bottom line.
Figure 1: The figure below shows a screen dump of one of many alternatives explored when optimising the design and operation of SASOL Coal's Twistdraai Coal Export Project. The model takes into account all the dynamics of the operation from the coal arising at the pitheads to final delivery at Richards Bay Coal Terminal and Sasol SSP. It included inter alia water and power balances.

Manufacturing Execution Systems
Until very recently, there has been very little automation of the systems linking the entire manufacturing processes.
Modern technology, combined with good engineering and information science has now enabled systems to be developed to co-ordinate the entire manufacturing, processing or mining complex.
This provides production with an effective means of planning, executing, monitoring and controlling the whole production process of complex businesses.
BeST has been involved in providing the completed systems and specialised components like scheduling for many blue chip clients.
Figure 2: The diagram below illustrated the components and sub-processes of a manufacturing execution system and how it is mapped to the company's objectives

Control and Advanced Control Systems
The fundamental requirement for effective automation is the installation of good process control environments.
BeST has grown out of this environment and has considerable expertise in PLC1, SCADA2 and DCS3 environments. The successful deployment of such systems, collectively known as base level control, requires in depth knowledge of the technical control systems, and knowledge of the processes that are being controlled.
BeST has also invested considerable time and effort into the development in advanced process control technology. This technology provides the operator with a real time decision support environment. This means that the optimal process control can be safely achieved.
Figure 3: Featured below is an illustration of the Cement Kiln at Dwaalboom. This unit has installed an adaptive model predictive controller. It is part of a cement plant that is operated by a totally integrated control system designed and installed by BeST.

Integration of Business systems
The biggest potential to leverage value from a business's information and control environment is by the integration of these systems.
A major obstacle in doing this is the fact that most business systems function as transactional systems while control systems operate in real time. The integration of these systems is not trivial. This is depicted in the figure below.
